A Journey Through Netherlands Historic Canals and Bridges

After a long time of not traveling, we are back at it. Luckily this time it was without the hassle from last year. Packed our bags and out the door to catch flights around the world for a second time. The start of our second world trip is in the canals of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam, the enchanting capital of the Netherlands, invites travelers to the scenic canals, historic architecture, and vibrant atmosphere. Whether you're wandering through its charming streets or cruising along its charming waterways,  Amsterdam is a city that will leave you fulfilled. 

One of Amsterdam’s most iconic features is its intricate canal system. With over 100 kilometers of canals and 1,500 bridges, the best way to experience them is by taking a canal cruise. Hop aboard a classic boat or a modern electric vessel and enjoy a relaxing tour that offers unique views of the city’s historic buildings and charming houseboats. For a more intimate experience, consider renting a private boat or even a paddleboard.

Amsterdam's neighborhoods each have their own distinctive character. The Jordaan, once a working-class district, is now known for its trendy boutiques, cozy cafes, and art galleries. Wander through its narrow streets, visit the local markets, and stop by the Anne Frank House to delve into a chapter of history.

Easiest way to get around is with a bike. You will see countless people riding a bike in Amsterdam. It is the most popular mode of transportation as well. Everything in Amsterdam is really close to each other, at most it is a 30 minute bike ride. Apps like donkey republic show many bikes available to rent near you. Riding a bike around Amsterdam is really fun and really beautiful. 

For the art lovers there is plenty to enjoy and admire in Amsterdam. The Rijksmuseum, home to masterpieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer, offers an extensive collection of Dutch art and history. Vincent Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands so it makes sense to have many museums based on him, his creations and his life. The Van Gogh museum has the largest collection of Vincent van Gogh’s works. 

For a more contemporary experience, visit the Stedelijk Museum, which showcases modern and contemporary art, design, and visual culture. Don’t forget to check out the Museumplein, a vibrant cultural square where you can also find the Concertgebouw, renowned for its exceptional classical music performances.

When traveling to any country, no trip is complete without trying the local cuisine. Sample traditional dishes such as bitterballen and Dutch pancakes, or enjoy a more modern culinary experience at one of the city’s Michelin-starred restaurants. If you want something from other cuisines, visit the food hall and stroll around the local market.

Amsterdam isn’t just about bustling streets and historic sites. It also offers serene green spaces. Vondelpark, the city’s largest park, is perfect for a leisurely stroll, a picnic, or simply relaxing by the pond. For a more peaceful experience visit the Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, where you can wander through lush greenery and exotic plants.

Rotterdam

After the wonderful charm of Amsterdam, we made our way to Rotterdam, a city that stands in contrast to the classic architecture and narrow streets of its northern neighbor. As the second-largest city in the Netherlands, Rotterdam is a vibrant, forward-thinking metropolis known for its innovative architecture, bustling port, and dynamic cultural scene.

Rotterdam’s history is deeply tied to the sea, and the city is home to one of the largest ports in the world. During World War II, much of the city was destroyed, but Rotterdam rose from the ashes with a spirit of reinvention. Today, its skyline is a testament to modern architecture and resilience.

Rotterdam’s architectural landscape is one of a kind. Places like the Cube Houses known for their unconventional and futuristic design, or the Erasmus Bridge which is the striking symbol of Rotterdam’s modernity, or even the Markthal a combination of a food market and residential apartments housed under a massive arched structure with a stunning mural that covers its entire ceiling, are all prime examples of the innovative architecture in Rotterdam.
